The ACT Children and Young People Death Review Committee (CYPDRC) is established under the Children and Young People ACT 2008 (the Act).
The CYPDRC functions are: to keep a register of deaths of children and young people, to report to the Minister in relation to deaths of children and young people, to identify patterns and trends in relation to deaths or serious injuries of children, young people and young adults; to identify areas requiring further research, by the committee or another entity, that arise from the identified patterns and trends; to undertake research that aims to help prevent or reduce the likelihood of deaths or serious injuries of children, young people and young adults; to make recommendations about legislation, policies, practices and services for implementation by the Territory and non-government bodies to help prevent or reduce the likelihood of deaths or serious injuries of children, young people and young adults.
Job description
The Committee Chair is required to have:
- Sufficient legal literacy to understand the CYPDRC’s primary obligations under its constituting legislation
- Sufficient governance skills to understand the role of the CYPDRC and the accountability mechanisms for the CYPDRC, including the CYPDRC’s ultimate accountability to the Minister for Children, Youth and Families.
- Sufficient level of understanding of the ACT Government and non-government service systems that interact with children and young people.
The Chair must:
- Not also be a member of the committee
- Have expertise and experience to be the Chair of the CYPDRC
- Be otherwise suitable to be the Chair.
