Details: The person selected into the position will provide, under limited direction, a range of applied ecological tasks to support the Fauna team in the Office of Nature Conservation. Equivalent positions may also be available within other Office of Nature Conservation teams. Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Assist with ecological research and monitoring, including the planning and implementation of scientifically robust field surveys of terrestrial and/or aquatic flora and fauna. Assist in the provision of scientific advice and logistical support.
  • Assist in the management and analysis of data, including spatial information, and written material including reports, information papers and correspondence to inform evidence-based decision making, policy, and adaptive management.
  • Assist in the collection, identification, preservation, storage, display and/or retrieval of biological materials and reference information.
  • Undertake delegated responsibilities as a Conservation Officer pursuant to the Nature Conservation Act 2014. Maintain records in accordance with the Territory Records Act 2002.
  • This position may involve direct supervision of other field staff at level.
  • Understand and work within the ACTPS Code of Conduct and ACTPS values of respect, integrity, collaboration and innovation, and model behaviour consistent with the ACTPS Respect Equity and Diversity framework.
  • Work within an Activity Based Working Environment.
  • Maintain records in accordance with the Territory Records Act 2000.

Eligibility/Other requirements:

  • Tertiary qualification (or equivalent) in a field of environmental management or biological science is required. Experience in terrestrial or aquatic fauna surveys and plant identification is desirable.
  • Current Driver’s License and ability to drive a vehicle (4WD) is essential.
  • Willingness and ability to work safely in remote locations, on boats, out of hours and in adverse weather conditions, and the ability to work independently in the field if required.

Notes: This is a temporary position available immediately for a period of up to two years. A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months. Individual positions will be filled from this merit pool depending on specific project skills required. Selection may be based on application and referee reports only. This position will work from a workplace designed for activity-based working (ABW). Under ABW arrangements, officers will not have a designated workstation/desk. Opportunities for flexible working options could include hybrid working, being a combination of working from home, designated office based and field-based working locations across the ACT.
